2018 Worlds Group B to Quarters

Writer's picture: W2TW2T

What a crazy day to start off the road to quarters as each group will play all of their second round robin games on the same day to determine the 1st and 2nd seeds who move on to the quarterfinals. Royal Never Give Up came into the day dominant at 3-0, while Cloud9, Vitality, and Gen.G were all sitting at 1-3.

The day started with a huge upset by VIT over RNG on the back of Attila's Draven, going 6-1-6. Next up was C9's turn to upset reigning World Champions GG with Licorice pulling out the Hecarim in top lane, going 5-2-3. VIT continued their hot play; eliminating GG with Cabochard's Urgot going 5-1-5. With the Western buff, C9 also took down RNG in relatively easy fashion with a kill score of 13-4. This created a 3-way tie at 3-2 with only 1 match to go. First up was a battle of NA vs EU (C9 vs VIT) with the winner qualifying for quarters. Jensen's Zilean proved to be too much as he went 7-1-8 as C9 went 3-0 on the day to qualify. RNG had to win over GG to qualify and MLXG's Olaf went 8-2-6 for a good bounce back win. C9 and RNG had both qualified but needed a tiebreaker game to determine seeding, in a closely contested game where the kills were 19-19, RNG came out on top beating C9 to take the 1st seed.

RNG snuck through as 1st seed, C9 snag the 2nd seed after an impressive 3-0 second round robin, VIT were impressive going 2-1 but fell just short, and GG were very disappointing, going 0-3 and being eliminated in groups.
