NA LCS Data Visualization

I have always been a sucker for data, especially beautiful data and Reddit has shown me some very cool data visualizations. Esports has a vast amount of data, but it isn't always presented in an easy to consume manner. I have heard about tools such as Tableau and I finally got to try it out to produce the following data visualization. After aggregating the wins day over day over the NA LCS Summer Split season, I wanted to be able to show the movement in standings day over day as the season went on. In addition, I thought it would be useful to highlight the number of wins each team had as well on the same graphic. At first, I couldn't get the numbers to appear so I used the line / tube size to represent the wins.

I was actually very happy with how the above data visualization turned out, but I also wanted to do a more animated picture of some interesting stats from the NA LCS. One thing I noticed earlier in the season is that it felt like there was a lot of parody, so I was thinking about ways to represent this. I created the below graphic to show how jumbled up all the teams were in the first half of the split, but the second half was quite different. Team Liquid took and kept their lead at the top, running away from everyone else. Then Cloud9 came from the bottom and rose all the way up to 2nd, while pulling the playoff teams away from the bottom 3 that emerged.

Someone commented about representing losses and I thought about a scatterplot to show the movement of wins and losses. Cloud9 was my example as they had clear differences in the 1st half and 2nd half of the split. That 8 game win streak to end the split is still so amazing!

Streaks (- is a loss, + is a win): -1, +1, -4, +1, -1, +1, -1, +8
